In Maori mythology, Tiki was the first man created by god. The word now refers to large wood or stone carvings of humanoid figure that are used to mark sacred sites.

 

A tiki represents gods, guardian spirits and ancestors who are deitified after death. A tattoo of a tiki is a symbol of seeking protection and guidance from the gods or spirits of ancestors that overlook certain aspects of life.
