In the Maori language, ‘koru’ literally means ‘loop’. In traditional Maori art and design, the term refers to the spiral shape of an unfurling silver fern that is native to New Zealand.
The koru is an integral symbol in Maori art, from jewelry design to bone carvings and, of course, tattoos. The circular shape represents perpetual movement and growth, while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin, or to the ‘roots’. It is a symbol of new life, strength, inner peace, awakening, positive changes and personal growth.
A koru tattoo is an excellent choice to mark significant new phases in life, whether it is marriage, parenthood, migration, or a major career turning point.
