Stories of unicorns were around since early civilization as mentions of the creature can be traced back as far as to Mesopotamia and ancient Greece.
However, visuals of the mythical horned horse did not appear until around 1500 AD, where the contemporary image of the unicorn which we are familiar was first found on tapestries, woven during the Middle Ages.
Over in the Far East, there is a different version of the unicorn, known as the chilin. It was believed that the chilin was a celestial beast that will appear as a sign of prosper times ahead when an emperor rules benevolently.
However they are represented in tattoo art, unicorns always symbolizes goodness, purity, prosperity, mystery and magic.
